Weighted sleep masks have moved out of the blanket category and into their own shelf space. They are small, they ship cheaply, and they let a brand test a heavier product without committing to a full blanket program. That is why so many buyers now ask for them, and why the specification details matter more than the product size suggests.
Why Weighted Sleep Masks Are Growing
The category grew on the back of weighted blankets. Retailers that had built a weighted section needed smaller items to fill it, and a mask was the obvious adjacency: the same material story, the same shelf, a fraction of the carton volume.
Travel retail and gifting did the rest. A mask fits a gift set, a hotel amenity kit or an airline pouch, and it can move by air freight without wrecking the landed cost. Sampling cost is low enough for a brand to test three colourways at once.
Filling Materials and Weight Ranges
Glass microbeads are the most common fill. They are dense, they flow into narrow channels and they stay quiet in use. The trade-off is that they need a bead-proof lining and a stitched grid, because one broken stitch lets beads migrate to the end of the mask.
Plastic pellets are cheaper and lighter, and they rustle. Steel shot sits between the two on density. Some masks use a settled fibre pad instead of loose fill, which holds shape but cannot be adjusted at the sample stage. The weight tier is agreed in the tech pack, and so is where the weight sits: across the eye area, or at the perimeter where the mask meets the face.
Whichever fill is used, a mask needs a shake test and a channel-stitch check before bulk. Migration shows up as a lump in one corner after a few weeks of retail use.
Fabric and Strap Choices
The shell is usually polyester satin, cotton jersey or a bamboo viscose blend. Satin slides and photographs well for gift retail; jersey grips and hides creasing. Cooling nylon now appears on masks sold alongside a cooling comforter program.
The lining is the part buyers overlook. It has to be smooth against the face, it has to contain the fill, and it has to survive spot cleaning. A removable liner makes the care instruction far easier to write.
Strap design decides fit more than the fill does. A single elastic band is the cheapest option and the least adjustable. A hook-and-loop strap covers a range of head sizes, and a dual strap holds the mask flat instead of pulling it upward. Nose flaps and contoured eye cups are the details that most change how a mask sits on different face shapes.
Design Trends Worth Watching
Removable inserts are spreading. Buyers want a mask they can wash without washing the fill, and a pocketed liner solves that without changing the shell. Contoured cups are replacing flat pads: a moulded cup keeps fabric off the eye area, which changes the pattern, the fill layout and the packing method.
- Cooling fabric pairings that match an existing comforter range.
- Travel pouches and gift-ready packaging built into the carton spec.
- Quiet colourways and minimal branding for gift and hotel channels.
MOQ and Sampling for Sleep Masks
Typical OEM MOQ is around 300 pieces, confirmed per order once material, colourway, size and packaging are settled. Sampling runs about 7 days after the specification and materials are confirmed; bulk is about 30 days after the signed sample, order confirmation and materials are ready.
Lead time is usually decided by small parts rather than sewing. Sliders, elastic, woven labels and the pouch each carry their own minimums, and a custom-dyed shell will push the schedule. Quilting, filling, sewing, pressing, needle detection and packing run in-house at around 12,000 pieces per month. The weighted sleep mask range shows current builds; private label covers labels and packaging.
FAQ
What weight should a weighted sleep mask be?
There is no industry-standard figure. Buyers usually pick a tier that feels clearly heavier than a standard sleep mask without pulling on the strap, then confirm it on a fit sample across the head size range they sell into.
Why do beads migrate inside a weighted sleep mask?
Because the fill channels are too wide or the stitching is not closed at the ends. A stitched grid, a bead-proof lining and a shake test before bulk solve most of it.
What is the MOQ for a private label sleep mask?
Around 300 pieces per style at our plant, confirmed per order. Small parts such as sliders, elastic and retail pouches can carry their own minimums.
